If you’ve ever babysat, you know one kid is easier than three or four. The divorced dad doesn’t have to get along with his ex all the time, but if their relationship is rocky or she is a mean or difficult person, this can create strain on your relationship.Another important issue is you: Are you really cut out for dating a single dad?A man with kids has a lifetime obligation to those kids, and they will require his love, attention, and money.If you find you don’t like to share, or you just don’t like kids, that’s fine — it’s better to know this and avoid dating men with children, rather than put yourself in a situation that isn’t fair to you, him, or the kids.They may have some ketchup or other undistinguishable stains on their sleeves that they didn’t notice. This is totally normal and something you will eventually find to be very sexy. Raise their kids, and maintain a home, and support their families. Trust me, they don’t want to be and they did their best not to be, but there is just not *quite* enough time in any day to get it all done.Sometimes, it is everything they can do to get out the door to come see you in the first place. Next, you should know that they will probably not want to take you back to their place for quite some time. 1) they really don’t want their kids meeting any new person in their life until they are sure it is going to last a long while.Boy, was I wrong, and what a smack into reality I received!
Hopefully it’s both of us; I mean we are a package deal. I think about it, a bit longer than a moment, and regret it a little as we leave the store. Well, the truth is, life is not a television drama and this assumption is inaccurate.
Consider this a “how to date a single dad” advice list. He’ll eventually realize he’s doing it and the conversation will then become first date appropriate.
But if you have your eye on one, there are a few things you should know about them. First, you should know that he’s going to talk about his kids. I know, I know, the conversation should be greatly focused about you, him, and both of your awesomeness on a first date, but you have to understand that single dads live and breathe their kids and their kids’ happiness, so give him a minute or twenty to get it out of his system.
Not long after I did, would come that ever burning question, “Wait, you’re 31 and you have an 11 year old? Suddenly the conversation stops, and they disappear. There goes another potential match off into the potential match graveyard that has become the list of contacts in my phone. I am the dad in Target, browsing the toy section with my 4-year-old as he tries to pick “just one.” I’m a little annoyed that he’s taking so long, but so happy just watching him. “Picking out a toy is tough,” I say to him, laughing a little.
Crickets figuratively chirp on the other end of the line. Suddenly she walks by with her cart, and looks at us with a smile.
